Bucks County is rich with deep convictions and community awareness. Taking into consideration the words of Buck’s county’s own Pearl Buck, we must remember our duty.
We need to restore the full meaning of that old word, duty. It is the other side of rights. ~Pearl Buck
Living in beautiful Bucks County can sometimes cause Christian parents to overlook the dangers of drug experimentation amongst the teens in our schools and in our own neighborhoods. Any drug used outside of a managed physicians care is dangerous. Some teens are failing in school because of drug abuse and many times the underlying causes are gone unnoticed or unmentioned. It would be beneficial to our children if there is more public awareness. According to statistics, teens who smoke marijuana are at greater risks in life of psychiatric illnesses. 1 in every 10 will become addicts.
The drug, oxycontin is a very addictive drug that is very often prescribed by doctors. This drug has become as dangerous as heroin, crack, cocaine and it is destroying lives throughout the state.
As parents, we must be informed about drug abuse and inform our children about the dangers of drug abuse. The perils are alarming, but it is a fact, that parents who consistently talk to their children about the dangers of drugs are at a much lower risk of experimenting with these drugs.
Marijuana is the most often abused drug, with 14.3 million American users each month.
The statistics on heroin use are alarming. The majority of people are unaware of the amount of heroin use in the United States. People are abusing not only illegal street drugs (Heroin, Cocaine, Crack, Meth and Marijuana); there is a huge problem with the illegal use and abuse of prescription drugs. These would include-(Valium, Percocet, Hydroquinone, OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax and Ritalin).
As parents we must be aware of the side effects. They can range from mild itching to comas and death.
The major problem that arises from the consumption of psychotropic drugs is dependence, the compulsion to use the drug despite the obvious deterioration in the user’s health, employment, or social activities. Dependence of the different drugs varies from drug to drug in its extent and the effect that it has on each individual person; it can be physical or psychological or both. Physical dependence becomes apparent only when the drug intake is decreased or stopped and an involuntary illness called the withdrawal (or abstinence) syndrome occurs.
Drugs known to produce physical dependence are the opiates (i.e., opium and its derivatives) and central-nervous-system depressants such as barbiturates and alcohol. The type of dependence varies widely with both whatever the substance is and whoever is the user. In its most intense form the user can become obsessed with the drug and will only focus all of his interest and activity on obtaining and using it. Many will say “It’s not my problem.” It is our duty as parents to become more aware of the on-going problem that is a threat to our children as well as to our society. It is society’s problem because society will pay the consequences of drug abuse. Many crimes are committed while the drug addict is under the influence of a narcotic. Because of the fact that, both smoked cocaine and injected cocaine reach the brain in a very rapid manner – (in a matter of seconds,) it is predicted that there is more effect on behavior and violence in particular. Marijuana is linked to mental health problems. According to a February 2001 article in The British Journal of Psychiatry, regular use of marijuana may make things worse for people who already have mental health problems.
The good news is that people suffering from drug and or alcohol abuse can be successfully treated in drug addiction rehab. The success rate varies for each person and each individual situation. While in rehab, addicts learn therapeutic and educational process’ which help the addict begin recovery from alcohol or substance abuse. There are times that prescribed medications are needed to help the addict function in society. Example, if a person is Bi-Polar; they would need to be on medication to stabilize them. To rehabilitate simply means to restore or repair. It can be referring to physical, mental or health issues.
Drug addiction rehabs have been around for over sixty-five years. There are many different types of rehabs; all have the same goal. That goal is to help the alcoholic or drug addict learn how to live a productive life in society without using drugs or alcohol.
